Easy Extreme Pumpkin Carving Techniques

Are you tired of the same old jack-o-lantern each Halloween?  Are you one of those people who have adopted the carving style you knew growing up to one of those stencilers?

The brilliant Tom Nardone wrote his first book in 2007 and has had 3 follow ups.  Take a basic pumpkin, carve it fast but give it a bit of character, maybe a prop or two, and you are done.   He doesn’t respect the pumpkin.  He exploits the hell out of it and the end results are wonderful.

OK… I know…  the real name is “Extreme Halloween:  The Ultimate Guide to Making Halloween Scary Again“, but it is his 3rd book).  I heard him give an interview (some Podcast, I believe) and he was talking about the cover image.  He had initially had a few trick-or-treater dummies in the claws of this monster and the publisher made him remove them.  When you get this book and if you choose to build this creature, honor Tom and put those trick-or-treaters in the claws.

Star Wars Tauntaun Costume

This is awesome.  Amazing guy named Scott Holden created his own Tauntaun Costume.  Not exactly practical for parties, but a sure win in just about any costume contest.  Also not good for hot climates.

Detailed build pictures on his site.

Buying Halloween Props – Don’t Be Tricked!

My personal belief is that you will always be more satisfied if you make your own props (sense of accomplishment and getting a product that is exactly how you want it), there is nothing wrong with purchasing Halloween props online.

Be very careful about where your money is going, though.  A seller is always going to present their props in a way to make them appear as great as possible.  Doing this could be misleading.

Let’s take a look at this thing.

It is called “CREEPY 3 FOOT HALLOWEEN SKELETON PROP FOR HAUNTED HOUSES – LIFE-LIKE FULL 3D” (the caps are the sellers, not mine).  Right now it is selling for a bit under $17.

All you need to know is in that product description.  ”3 foot”.  Now look at the picture.  At a glance, it looks bigger than 3 feet tall.  Especially with the pumpkins around the feet and relaxing on a bale of hay with netting on it.

I’m not saying that you couldn’t pick this up and customize it.  But it is still 3 feet tall.  Little things can be scary if done right.  This isn’t.  Or it isn’t straight out of the box.

Don’t waste your money on this junk.  Pay attention to product titles and descriptions.  Don’t let buzz words trick you (creepy, for haunted houses, life-like, 3d).  Don’t base your decision only on pictures.

Doc Brown Shilling

Doc Brown Shilling

This commercial is great.  Makes me long for a 4th installment of Back to the Future.  But not too much… it would probably be horrible.  I’d rather them do a Number 4 than do a remake/reimagining/retelling/poop-in-the-toilet that I just know some Universal Exec is thinking about.  And Zemeckis… no motion capture either!

Easy Halloween Prop Project Tutorials

Halloween was always a big holiday in my home growing up.  My father and his buddies were essentially “home haunters” before the term “home haunt” came to be.  My dad was an electrical engineer.  We had a 5 foot Jacob’s Ladder that he had constructed.  Growing up I totally took it for granted.  I liked it and always thought it was really cool, but because I saw it all of the time, I didn’t think much of it.  Knowing what I do now, that thing was REALLY cool!!  All of his friends were quite gifted in all that they did.  Making sets, props, etc.  I learned early on that the hardware store was all you needed to make great stuff.  You couldn’t go to a store and buy props and forget about the idea of having a computer connected to other computers and being able to order things.

Flashforward a few years… thanks to my computer connected to other computers (the internets) I learned about Home Haunters.  There are other people all over the country who grew up doing this stuff with their dads and who are still doing this now.  People like me!  Awesome.

Some of them have taken it a step further and have been nice enough to share their tips and techniques on YouTube.  It may be a little late in the game now to get started on some of these (there is always next year, right?).

 Plastic Corpsing
“Corpsing” is basically taking materials such as latex, plastic, paint, pantyhose, wood stain, and other stuff and putting it onto a form (usually a skeleton) to make it into a corpse…or rotten or whatever.   Most techniques aren’t necessarily hard, but they do take time since you have to let the latex and paint dry.. especially the latex.  Allen Hopps shows a quick way to corpse a cheap, plastic skeleton.

I feel like I should also encourage you to view the other Stiltbeast Studio tutorials.  Even if you do not plan on building anything, they are quite funny.

Pumpkin Corpsing
This is the more traditional corpsing technique.  Reason I have it here is because it isn’t showing you how to corpse a plastic skeleton or animal.  It shows the technique on the foam craft pumpkins.  It doesn’t really make the pumpkins look rotten and old.  It gives them a very sinister look.  It is the look of the jack-o-lanterns you see in movies and on tv.  Awesome.

This tutorial is from Chris Baker at HauntCast.  HauntCast is an incredible podcast that comes out once a month that is dedicated to the home haunter.  How incredible?  Let me put it to you like this… Chris was feeling a financial pinch from putting his show together and decided to start charging $1 a show.  Without question, I threw in $12 for a year subscription.  I have NEVER paid for a podcast directly before (indirectly through buying through advertisers) and this show was so great, I was willing to shell out the money for it.  The good thing is that he changed his model and went back to having it freely available to all (smarter move if you ask me as I think it would be harder to grow an audience the other way).  Visit hauntcast.net for the site and it is available in iTunes.

As the holiday nears, I’ll probably post a few more tutorials on here.  Fun stuff.

The Muppets: The Pig with the Froggy Tattoo

The Muppets: The Pig with the Froggy Tattoo

The parody trailers for the new Muppet Movie are getting a little old.  I love the Muppets and they have always parodied different things.  These trailers are getting old, though.  I liked the first one that played out like a romantic comedy.  If the others stayed in that same line (presenting the film as another genre), then I’d be fine with them.  Instead they are simply basing the trailer off of another specific movie’s trailer.. not just the genre.

This one may be my favorite out of the latest bunch (Hangover 2, Green Lantern, and the Girl with a Dragon Tattoo).

Still… not necessary.  Halloween is coming up.  Do a horror movie parody.  Don’t do a specific horror movie parody.

And I hope that all of these trailers aren’t giving too much away.

Thoughts on the Scarlett Johansson Leaked Nudes Pictures

I have mixed thoughts on the Scarlett Johansson pictures and the whole situation behind them.

First and foremost, I don’t care who you are, if you take nude pics of yourself, you run the risk of them getting out. It could be an accident on your part, a former boyfriend/girlfriend seeking revenge, etc. If you are a celeb, you are definitely a target. This was a dumb thing to do.

Secondly, I don’t condone the action of hacking her account, but there are measures one can take to minimize the possibility of this happening. Was it as secure as it could have been? I don’t know. If she had easy to guess passwords and the like, again… her fault.

Thirdly, I guess if you are in that situation you have 3 options. The first is that old standby “Deny, Deny, Deny”. That can work to an extent since some pictures aren’t very clear and there are a lot of people that may resemble someone else. In this case, they were pretty clear… or so I was told…

The other option would be to say “that’s me” and move on. People will forget about it shortly. Remember, the Kardashians, Lohan, or Paris Hilton will do something stupid to get the focus back on them.

The third option, and the one that she appears to have chosen (or more likely, “her people” chose) is to get lawyers involved and also the authorities. I don’t necessarily disagree with getting the authorities in on this. A crime was committed. They need to investigate. But her lawyers need to take a little lesson in Internet Tubes 101.

“The highly personal and private photographs at issue capture our client self-posing in her own home in a state of undress and/or topless. If you fail to comply, you will be acting at your own peril.”

What they are saying is “We confirm that these are nude pictures of Scarlett Johansson.  We are also going to go after you because we are going to rid the internets of these pictures”.

Guess what?  The pictures may disappear from one site, but they are going to be up on another… and another… and another.  They will never disappear and there is nothing you can do about it.

And as far as the FBI goes… I’m sure agents are going to pull rank so that they can get this assignment.   So they can take a very close look at the stolen pics… a very close look… and round up as many other nude celebrity pictures as they can for evidence.

It is unfortunate that this happened, but she made the decision to take the pics herself.  And as that old saying goes, any publicity is good publicity.  She should be more concerned if the pics came out and no one cared.  That would be indicative that her career was over.

Trick ‘r Treat’s Sam Goes Back to School

Trick ‘r Treat is one of my favorite movies.  Much like Tales from the Crypt, it has the right mix of horror and dark humor.  I read one review saying that it was the ultimate homage to the Halloween holiday.  I do not disagree.

Here is a short promo that Fearnet put out to promote it’s 24 hour marathon (take that TNT and your Christmas Story).

If you like this, you will love the movie.
